Silent Retreat in Italy
A place made of silence
Eremito is a hotel in the hills of Umbria, and a silent retreat in Italy in the fullest sense: here silence is not a rule imposed from outside, it is the substance of the place.
Every evening dinner is shared in silence, accompanied by Gregorian chant.
During the day, silence settles naturally, in the chapel, on the forest trails, in the stone spaces of the hermitage.
You do not take a vow. You simply stop talking, and start listening.
And if you want the whole stay in silence, you can have it: a small badge, available on request, says it for you.
Silence as it is lived here
Many retreats schedule silence. At Eremito, silence is simply how the place breathes.
The hermitage stands alone in the UNESCO Monte Peglia Biosphere Reserve, far from roads and villages, in one of the quietest corners of central Italy. There is no Wi-Fi, no television, no mobile signal inside. What remains is the sound of the woods, the bells, the chant.
The silent dinner is the heart of it: every evening at 19:30, guests gather in the candlelit refectory and share a vegetarian meal without words, while Gregorian harmonies fill the room. Conversation returns afterwards, by the fireplace, for those who wish.
During the day you may speak freely. Those who prefer complete silence for their whole stay can wear a small badge, available on request, that reads “I am in silence”. The staff and other guests will understand, and respect it.

Questions we are often asked
Can I spend my whole stay in silence?
Yes. Guests who wish to remain in silence for their entire stay wear the “I am in silence” badge, available on request, and the staff and the other guests respect it without a word. Silence is compulsory only at dinner, so the rest of the day is your choice, and many guests find themselves speaking less and less.
Is this a religious retreat?
No. Eremito borrows the rhythms of monastic life, silence, simplicity, Gregorian chant, but it is a hotel. Guests of every background are welcome, and every practice is optional.
Can I come with a friend or partner?
Yes. Some Celluzze accommodate two or three guests. Many couples come precisely to share a few days of quiet together.
Not for everyone. For those who wish to inhabit time, not fill it.
Rediscover your rhythm
Eremito was not created to offer escape or entertainment. It was created to offer a space of listening, presence and sobriety. A place that originates in a personal story, but finds its meaning only in the experience of those who pass through it.
